Alkaline batteries in smart systems

As a rule, alkaline batteries are used in most modules of modern systems. Whether it is motion detectors, modules for executive functions or other elements of alarm systems or smart control systems. Modern elements, as a rule, consume very little electricity, so alkaline batteries are of sufficient capacity for their long and reliable operation.

For elements that are installed in places with extreme conditions, the use of lithium batteries is highly recommended.

Capacity

Alkaline batteries have a significantly lower capacity per unit mass than lithium batteries. Alkaline batteries are also cheaper than lithium batteries, so the choice of the right battery is often the ratio of investment and profit.

Application

Internal alarm detectors or smart modules:

In most cases, detectors located inside warm and dry rooms work well with standard alkaline batteries, but we highly recommend the use of well-known brands (as in our range of alkaline batteries) and we would not recommend the use of cheap batteries with dubious characteristics, nor rechargeable batteries that, as a rule, are not intended for this purpose.

If the indoor room where the detector will be installed is prone to extremely cold conditions, we recommend the use of a lithium battery (see details for outdoor system detectors).

External alarm detectors or smart modules:

Detectors or other elements of smart systems that are located outside the building can obviously be exposed to very low temperatures during the winter months, so we recommend the use of lithium batteries for these sensors during cold weather.

It is not uncommon for users to choose to use alkaline batteries during the warmer months and then switch to lithium batteries for the winter months, while some users will simply use lithium batteries year-round.

If you are using some element of the solar system inside a cold building, such as a garage, shed, barn or steel container, it would also be wise to consider using lithium batteries during the colder months.

Basic principles and differences:

Alkaline batteries:

In extremely cold conditions (low temperatures) alkaline batteries can operate with significantly reduced performance, this is because alkaline batteries are designed using water-based electrolytes, very low temperatures approaching freezing point can lead to sluggishness, reduced power or even a complete shutdown of the battery.

It is clear that the battery inside the device it powers will be protected to some extent from cold wind and temperature, but this is a factor that needs to be taken into account.

Extremely low temperatures can cause cracking or leakage of alkaline batteries, but in very rare cases.

Lithium batteries

Lithium batteries work very well in cold conditions due to the fact that the operating temperature is designed to be around -40° to + 60°C (-40° to 140°F), although at -40° the efficiency is reduced, but more are effective at temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F), therefore more suitable for alarm sensors used outdoors or in cold buildings.

Lithium batteries will also typically last up to 6 to 8 times longer than alkaline batteries, but will cost at least 2 to 4 times more, so will be better value in most cases.
